Shettles Method: What Is It, and Does It Work?
The Shettles method is a theory that claims to help parents influence the sex of their baby by timing intercourse in relation to ovulation. It is based on the idea that male (Y-chromosome) sperm swim faster but die sooner, while female (X-chromosome) sperm are slower but live longer. According to this method, having intercourse closer to ovulation may increase the chances of a boy, while having it a few days before ovulation may favor a girl. However, scientific evidence does not strongly support this theory, and most experts agree that the baby’s sex is largely determined by chance.
Key Points:
- Based on timing intercourse around ovulation
- Suggests different survival traits of X and Y sperm
- Not scientifically proven or guaranteed
- Baby’s sex is naturally determined by chromosomes
- Should not be relied on for medical or planned outcomes
